“This is my fun money — it doesn't count the same as my regular budget.”
What's happening
People mentally sort money into separate buckets — bonus money, gift cards, "fun money," the emergency fund — and treat each bucket by different rules, even though it's all the same money sitting in the same overall financial picture.
A financial example
A $1,000 tax refund gets spent on something the regular budget would never allow, because it "doesn't feel like real money" — even while carrying credit card debt that same $1,000 could have paid down.
A better question
If this landed in my regular checking account with no label on it, what would I actually do with it?
